The common cold is something that effects each and everyone of use at some point in time. Many of us usually go to the Doctor or the local drug store and expense themselves purchasing various types of medication.
I am taking a look at the common cold, order to help you understand how it is contracted and some simple and inexpensive ways you can fight or even prevent it.

The first thing we're going to look at, is the symptoms of the common cold. Sometimes we mistake the cold for something else and we don't act upon it until it is already upon us. The symptoms of the coin mmon cold are as follows......

Symptoms of the Common Cold

A runny or blocked nose, sore throat, sneezing, cough, headache and mild fever are all signs of the common cold. Flu symptoms are similar but the fever is usually higher, alternating with chills and accompanied by sweating, aches and pain and fatigue.

Now that you know the symptoms, let's take a look at how the cold is transmitted from person to person.

The cold germ is spread from person to person when someone, who is infected, sneezes or coughs into the air or on you. The airborne germ then enters someone else’s body through an orifice, like your eyes, nose or mouth. You can also catch a cold by touching something that a person who has been infected has also touched and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

Okay, now we can get into the meat of this article. What can we do to prevent the common cold from overtaking us in the first place?

Cold Prevention Tips

1. You should wash your hands a lot. Frequent washing of your hands, especially when using an anti-bacterial soap, will help you to get rid of any potential germs that you might have come into contact with.

2. You should carry and use anti-bacterial hand lotion several times throughout the day. Use it especially when you cannot get to a bathroom and you know you have touched something infected or have been near an infected person.

3. You should also get plenty of sleep or rest. If you are tired and fatigued, your body’s resistance decreases and you will find that you are more susceptible to colds.

Well, that's great news, but what if you already got the cold, then what?

Luckily, I've also got some tips to battle the cold once you've actually got it.

Tips For Fighting The Common Cold

1. You should eat spicy foods. Spicy hot foods will cause your body to expel mucus. When you eat these types of foods, your nose will start to run and you will begin to cough up mucus. Spicy foods work just like a natural decongestant but without side effects. This advice is good for those people who cannot take over the counter medication.

2. You should drink plenty of liquids. Liquids like soup, water, juice and flat ginger ale will keep your body hydrated. This is true especially if you have a fever. During a fever, your body loses a lot of fluids. You will need to replenish what you have lost. Therefore you need to drink often throughout your illness. You should also avoid drinking any dairy drinks because the dairy will cause mucus to form and coat your throat making it very difficult for you to swallow and cough.

3. You should use a vaporizer. It will keep the air that you breathe moist. If you do not have a vaporizer handy, then just crack open the windows in your home. This is very important if you have an extremely warm and dry home. Cracking the windows will have the same effects that a vaporizer has.

4. Eat plenty of leeks and green onions. These herbs have powerful cold fighting properties. You can eat healthy vegetable soup with leeks or green onions in it. This will make you sweat , but don't take a shower whlie you have fever. Just clean your body with wet towel and change the night clothe and sleep well.

5. Take a large clove of Garlic, peel and keep it in your mouth. Bite down every so-often to release the natural juices. Replace with a new clove every four or five hours. Your cold symptoms should be to gone in twenty four, to forty eight hours.

6. Not hungry? Try a few minutes of vigorous exercise. The increased oxygen demand of your body will almost certainly cause you to breathe deeper and help open-up your blocked nasal passages naturally.

7. Chest congestion can be effectively cleared up by breathing a mixture of hot vinegar, or white wine. Breath in the vapors for a few minutes, and you should get relief!

8. Coughs and sore throats can be controlled with several home remedies. A classic requires a large lemon. Start by slowly roasting it until it just splits open. Now take up to half a teaspoon of honey with the juice from the lemon. Repeat at hourly intervals until the cough is under control.

9. Stop the cough - When you can't quit coughing, drink hot ginger tea. Ginger stimulates circulation and helps clear your sinuses and lungs of mucus.

10. Breathe easier - One of the best ways to open clogged sinus and bronchial passages is to breathe warm steam to which you've added essential oil of eucalyptus.
